Howz about we invite Chris from Kinetics & Akzah from Airnav to meet one day in the chat room where they can debate the pros & cons of the individual systems then we can have a Q&A session afterwards.

I would probably have to set up a server for this, if it is well publicized, I can imagine that the interest would be enormous from all the forums and would want to avoid crashes in the middle of what could be a very exiting debate.

What do you all think Huh?

Hamish

I would certainly be interested.  As a user of both I see good and bad in both systems, so if we can convince the manufacturers to make modifications via something like this, that would be great.  No offence, Chris, but mabe it should be a discussion between someone from Kinetic and someone from AirNav.

It would be a great idea if:

A. it didn't turn into a pointless slanging match

and

B. both of them agreed unconditionally that when the debate was over they would stop sniping and dissing in all the topics they respond to.

Interesting idea but I'm not sure it would work for the reasons stated.  I also think the supplier participants would become defensive and seize every opportunity to present their products as best.  We'd get a wrestling match at best.

Maybe, as an alternative, have two seperate sessions where members can quiz each supplier about their products?

I went to the SBS Open Day at ML&S at the beginning of Feb and there was some healthy debates and probing questions.

Just a thought.

No - its not a good idea, and not what I come to a forum like this for. IMHO Supplier representaties should only be allowed on the forum to answer specific support questions relating to their own products. They should not be allowed to "sell" the merits of their own product, or the demerits of the competition! The one exception I would make to this rule is that they must be allowed to respond to a factually incorrect statement made about their product by another forum member, with a statement of fact, not opinion. (A bit strong perhaps, but I have seen it work on other forums).

I find the whole "mine's netter than yours" debate totally tiresome  Angry. I bought my SBS when there was no competition, and paid a higher price as a result. But it does what I want it to. I like the fact that I can use add-ons to customise my "exerience", and to try different things and change them when I want. I want know what is flying about near me, now, not what was flying over Lithuania five minutes ago, so I am not intersted in sharing data. So the SBS meets my needs. On the other hand I am absolutely certain that there are folks out there, with different needs, for whom the RB is better choice - and that's great, good luck to them and Airnav, competition feeds development, drives down costs and benefits all of us.

The point is, any purchasing decision is a personal one, based on personal needs, and should ideally be made following a thorough appraisal of both products, including demonstrations from suppliers. The forum is neither the place, nor the audience, for the suppliers to sell their products. Most of us, having already bought one (or possibly both) of the offerings already, are not in the market anyway.

Lets make this forum a place of rational, sensible, informed, respectful, and mutually benficial conversation.

Thanks,

John. Smiley
