Hi all,
Whilst those of us in Northern Europe have some time to kill due to VERY blank screens and lack of aircraft, it seems like now is the best time to try to launch an initiative from Kinetic/ML&S.

We are looking to start/run our own photo database (Thumbnail size images only 200 x 133 pixels) of up-to-date images of aircraft which we can display within Basestation.
The reason behind this is we have spent MANY months trying to get approval from the main suppliers of images we all use officially, and all were worried about the copyright issues on the thumbnail sized images we requested to use.
So to resolve this, we propose to put an archive on sbs-resource.com (don?t look there yet as it is not live!) and will also be available on CD in the future.
We would like the filename to be saved as per current practise of reg.jpg I.E. G-ABCD.jpg or N1234A.jpg so that we do not need a magnifying glass to try to work out what the aircraft is!

You will be able to download the images (once the library goes live) and will be free of charge to access. Credit for images used will be given on-screen on a credits page rather than individual images (similar to the practise followed in most aviation magazines).
What we are ideally looking for, are side-on images of current aircraft/colour-schemes (static or airborne) and hope to upload/inform viewers of interesting new additions on a daily basis, so that all our libraries are up to date.

All that we ask is that you own the copyright to the images you upload, and that by uploading images to the email address below, and that you are happy for the images to be used/circulated as indicated above.

We will do our best to offer something to start with as quickly as possible. Keep an eye on this thread for more information/updates.

We look forward to initially receiving images via the library address:
photo@sbs-resources.com

Many thanks

Paul & Rick

Is this because both JETPHOTO and AIRLINERS.NET will shortly be pulling the plug on the current method of obtaining images.

Will this service be open to users of all systems or just SBS ??

The indications we have recieved from all of the major libraries, is the method of photo collection we all use is going to be changed due to 'mis-use' of there servers...
There is no reason that anyone elese other than SBS owners will not be able to access the data once registered to pick up images from the site, though obviously, the SBS owners will have a few more options available to them compared to other platforms.

Does this now mean that no Virtual Radar system will be able to download any photos from the above mentioned sites ??

I suspect we'll have to wait and see if these sites "change" the method of photo collection?

Personally, I can't see anything changing other than, maybe, some block on bulk trawling of images.

Basestation doesn't have a photo collection feature.  Flight Display did but is no longer distribiuted or supported. RadarBox has some sort of tie-up with Airliners.net which may or may not continue, depending on what is really going on behind the scenes, if anything.

As long as these image sites display photos, I can't see them stopping the "image grab" process, but I could be wrong.

But if enthusiasts want to share their aircraft images with Basestation users, that's their decision.  But there's always the "risk" that these images will reach a wider audience, just like airfield outlines, operator logos and silhouettes do today.

Active Display still performs the same task as Flight Display did with regard to photos, and will be adding the SBS library as a source once the library goes live.

Either email support@sbs-resources.com for details of where and how to do it or send them on a CD to

Chris Taylor
SBS Photos
MARTIN LYNCH & SONS LTD.
OUTLINE HOUSE
73 GUILDFORD STREET
CHERTSEY
SURREY

And we will do the rest

Many thanks for the support so far... 1000 images in less than 24 hours!!!

Regards

Hamish,
We have spent many months talking to the online libraries, and at present no one has an offical link with them due copyright issues with the original photographers as this usage was not envisaged when originally uploaded.
Due to the way some users are downloading the data, there are changes afoot, and the SBS library will hopefully fulfill the need for the market.

Individual users will be able to register with the site and gain access to the facility.

Regards

Paul
